Huchuy Qosqo

Meaning Little Cusco in Quechua, Huchuy Cusco is an Incan ruin located north of Cusco and is part of the Calca province in the region of Cusco. Archeological evidence suggests the site dates back to 1000 and 1300 A.D and was built by Incan Emperor Viracocha. Believed to be the royal estate of Viracocha, in the later part of his reign the neighboring tribe of Cancha revolted and attacked Cusco.

During the assault, Viracocha fled to his Royal estate of Huchuy Qosqo. However, his son Cusi Yupanqui, who’s name would later be changed to the Famous Pachacutec, stayed and successfully defended Cusco Against the Cancha attackers. Pachacutec would eventually take the title as Sapa Inca, “Inca Emperor”, from his father. He would become by far the most famous leader in the history of the Incan Empire. Pachacutec would lead the empire into a new age of conquest and advancement. Pachacutec conquered many neighboring lands and peoples and constructing the most impressive structures of the empire including the world-famous Machu Picchu.
