Should You Climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain?
If you’re visiting Machu Picchu, you have two incredible summit hikes to choose from. The two most popular are Machu Picchu Mountain (Montaña) at 3,082 m (10,111 ft) and Huayna Picchu at 2,693 m (8,835 ft). Both require different tickets and sell out daily, but Huayna Picchu sells out 3 to 4 months in advance
Separate tickets are required for each hike, and neither includes the classic postcard viewpoint.
Why Huayna Picchu Is Machu Picchu’s Most Intense Hike

Why does Huayna Picchu sell out first? It offers the famous photo looking straight down onto Machu Picchu. It is the steeper and more exposed climb, with narrow stone stairs, sheer drops, and sections with steel cables and ladders where you must use your hands. It is not recommended for anyone with a severe fear of heights. You’ll need to keep your hands free as it gets trickier towards the top. Ladders and cables are provided to hold on to. This hike is perfect for adrenaline seekers.
The great thing about Huayna Picchu is that when you’re at the peak, you are able to look straight down over the Machu Picchu ruins and the Urubamba River. It is a faster hike and you get the bonus of seeing some partially completed Inca buildings. The hike will take about 2 hours, roundtrip. Finally, please note that the trail can be very slippery when it’s wet or rainy.
Are the entrance tickets limited?
Yes. Huayna Picchu is limited to 200 hikers per day (100 per time slot). Book 3 to 4 months in advance for high season (May through to October).

Which is harder on the knees, Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain?
Huayna Picchu is harder on knees going down. The descent is very steep with uneven Inca steps and you must face the rock in places. Machu Picchu Mountain is longer but the gradient is steadier and the steps are wider. If you have knee issues, choose Machu Picchu Mountain and use trekking poles.
What is the age limit for each mountain?
