Day 1: Cusco – Capuliyoc – Chikiska – Playa Rosalinas

Your grand adventure kicks off at 5:00 AM when your guide picks you up from your hotel in a private van. As we leave the city, we embark on a spectacular 4 hour drive to Capuliyoc. Situated on the precipice of the Apurimac Canyon, this is where the terrain shifts, surrounded by majestic, snow-capped peaks. After meeting our horsemen and finalizing our gear, we begin our descent. It is a thrilling 2 hour hike down to Chikiska, where we stop to enjoy a freshly prepared lunch. Energized, we continue for another hour of trekking until we reach the floor of the canyon at Playa Rosalinas (1,550m). By the time you arrive, our team will have already set up camp, and you will be welcomed with hot drinks and appetizers before settling in for a hearty dinner under the starlit Andean sky.

After lunch and a restorative rest, we leave our camp behind. We hike up over a ridge before a 2 hour descent into the fascinating ruins of Pinchiunuyoc, a secluded and truly captivating site where we will set up our camp for the night. We continue our ascent for another hour until we reach the Victoria Pass (4,130m). The panoramic views from the summit are nothing short of breathtaking. From here, we descend for 2 hours toward the charming village of Yanama, navigating sections of well preserved original Inca steps. After soaking in the view, we hike downhill for 2 hours to the hydroelectric plant for lunch. From there, we continue our walk to Aguas Calientes, nestled in the shadows of the surrounding mountains. Questions and Answers

How do I book the Choquequirao to Machu Picchu Trek?

Start by clicking the Book Now button on our homepage. We require a non-refundable deposit of $211 USD per person to secure your permits. Please have the following information for each traveler ready: Full name (as it appears on your passport), Gender, Passport Number, Date of Birth, and Nationality.

How do I handle the final balance?

The remaining balance is payable in our Cusco office. We recommend payment in cash (USD or Peruvian Soles) to avoid service fees. If you prefer to pay online, we accept VISA and PayPal (a 5.5% service fee applies). If paying via PayPal, please log in and send payment to: info@incatrailhikeperu.com.

Can I change my departure date?

Generally, no. Once trekking permits and entrance tickets are purchased, government regulations strictly forbid changes. Tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable. If you cancel, your deposit is forfeited. For alternative treks, date changes may be possible for a fee, provided your specific permits have not yet been finalized. Contact our office immediately if a schedule conflict arises.

Do I need my original passport?

Yes. You must carry the exact passport used to book your trek. Rangers will verify it at the entrances to both Choquequirao and Machu Picchu. If you renew your passport, we can update your file for a $25 USD fee; you must provide copies of both your old and new passports. If you do not update the records, you must carry both the old and new passports to gain entry. Without these, you will be denied access.

Is the trek difficult? Do I need to be fit?

Yes, this is a “formidable” trek. It requires excellent physical condition and good altitude acclimatization. If you do not exercise regularly, we strongly advise a consistent regimen of walking, hiking, or aerobic activity in the months leading up to your trip.

What about altitude sickness?

If you exercise regularly and spend 2–3 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley prior to the trek, you will likely adapt well. We carry professional-grade oxygen on all treks. Our guides are trained to monitor and treat altitude symptoms. We recommend staying hydrated, drinking Coca tea, and perhaps booking a gentle walking tour of the Sacred Valley to aid your acclimatization.

What is the weather like?

Andean weather is notoriously unpredictable. You will traverse multiple microclimates, so expect temperature swings. You must be prepared for everything from intense midday sun to cold, windy evenings. We highly recommend packing moisture-wicking layers and high-quality rain gear in your daypack at all times.

How does luggage work on the trek?

The evening before departure, you will receive a duffel bag with a 7 kg (15 lb) allowance. Our porters carry this bag, along with all food and camping equipment. You will not have access to this bag until you reach camp in the evening. You must carry a 30–40 liter daypack containing your essentials: a warm jacket, rain gear, camera, sunscreen, snacks, and water.

Are there toilets on the trek?

Yes. We prioritize your comfort by providing private, sanitary facilities. We set up an individual, clean camping toilet tent with a seat at a comfortable distance from the campsite. It is strictly maintained and accessible throughout the night.

What happens if I cannot finish the trek?

Our team is trained to assist you in the event of exhaustion or illness. We will help you reach the nearest town for safe transport. We carry emergency oxygen for respiratory issues. In extreme cases, a helicopter extraction can be arranged at your own expense. Travel insurance is mandatory, and please note that there are no refunds if you are unable to complete the trek.

How many people are in a group?

We specialize in intimate, high-quality experiences. While our maximum group size is 8 people, most of our groups consist of 2 to 6 hikers.

What is the pre-trek briefing?

You will meet your guide at 6:00 PM on the evening before your departure. The briefing takes place at our office: Garcilaso Street 210, Office No 213, 2nd Floor, inside La Casa del Abuelo.

Can I store my luggage?

Yes. During the trek, your main luggage can be stored at our office or your hotel, free of charge.

Will I be dropped off at my hotel after the trek?

Yes. On the final day, we provide a private drop-off at your hotel in Cusco. If you have booked accommodation in the Sacred Valley (Ollantaytambo or Urubamba), we can drop you off there as well.

How does tipping work?

Tipping is not mandatory, but it is a standard gesture of appreciation in the tourism industry. Our staff works exceptionally hard to ensure your comfort. If you are pleased with the service, tipping is a great way to motivate and support our team. The amount is entirely at your discretion based on your perception of service quality.

Are you a sustainable operator?

Yes. We are 100% locally owned and dedicated to sustainable tourism. We protect the environment, respect Andean culture and religion, and benefit local communities through direct employment and fair wages. Our staff is trained to honor the places we visit.

Train & Vistadome Details

Standard: We typically book the 4:22 PM Expedition train to maximize your time. The route is 2 hours from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo, followed by a 2-hour bus transfer to Cusco.

Vistadome Upgrade ($67 USD): This upgrade features panoramic windows, a glass ceiling, onboard snacks, and a cultural dance show.
